On Sunday, at the San Agustín National University stadium, Bernardo Cuesta helped Melgar, with 10 men, to beat Sport Boys 2-1, bringing the local team to 10 unbeaten games in the First Division.
Cuesta put Melgar ahead with 11 minutes left, when he directed the ball into the net with a header. The forward shot low into the left corner after combining with Cristian Bordacahar.
The victory for Marco Antonio Valencia’s team also came thanks to a goal from Kenji Cabrera, while Jesús Barco scored for the visitors.
Paolo Reyna warned Melgar with a direct red card two minutes before the break.
Cabrera put the hosts ahead eight minutes before the break, directing the ball into the net with a header. The midfielder fired high into the left corner after combining with Bordacahar for the first of his two assists. However, the lead did not last long, as Barco equalized the contest in the 73rd minute. Cristian Techera provided the assist. The VAR reviewed the goal before the match continued. But the hosts reacted well and Cuesta’s winning goal came six minutes later.
Although it did not influence the result in the end, Brian Blando wasted a good chance for Melgar in the match.
With this victory, Melgar extends his winning streak in the league against Boys to seven.
