Denise Welch has faced trolls shaming her for her sober journey.
The Loose Women regular has come under fire after a heated exchange with Dickie Arbiter about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. The former royal press secretary was asked to speak about King Charles III’s cancer battle but eventually addressed her strained relationship with the Duke of Sussex.
Denise took a stand in favor of Prince Harry and his wife, who she deemed had been “completely and continually trashed by the media” throughout her time as a royal and the on-air row left Coleen Nolan with little choice but to intervene and face her co-star’s wrath in the process.
“I am just sick to death of the bashing that this woman gets (…) we continually berate this woman every day,” Denise notably said. “I can say what I like!” she then furiously responded to Coleen who was trying to appease tensions. Many ITV viewers reacted to the segment by praising the star but among them, trolls lurked around social media, with one of her shaming her for her sobriety.
“Good old Denise,” they penned on X, formerly known as Twitter, “surprised she can stay sober enough to be able to take part in a debate.” But while the comment could have left Denise reeling, she quickly responded by directly addressing her online hater of her. “12 years Dougie!! Keep up,” she wrote, pairing her message from her with two thumbs up emojis.
Some of her fans were appalled by the comment and made it clear to Denise as one horrified social media user reacted: “I’ve seen some horrible comments before, but this is particularly shocking to not only disrespect Denise in this way, but to have so little regard for those who struggle daily with addiction. What a horrible soul.”
Denise Welch has made no secret of her struggle with addiction, like many other stars who have the steps for an alcohol-free life taken. In 2023, the former Coronation Street actress celebrated 11 years of sobriety with a post on Instagram where she opened up about her “disastrous” relationship with booze and how giving up ella had helped her and ella husband Lincoln Townley turn their life around.
“11 yrs sober today!!! Giving up my disastrous relationship with alcohol changed my life, my husband’s life and my children’s lives. Plus the lives of all who love me,” she captioned her post.
“It wasn’t easy. Addiction is a cruel and frightening illness. But together @lincolntownley and I realized that we were destroying many lives including our own and we did it.” She’d then added: “I now have a wonderful marriage that is the foundation of my life. Our kids are happy and I hope those of you struggling find the strength to stop.”
