While there is currently a subsidy scheme that divides residential users into 3 segments: Level 1 (high income) that pays in full, Level 2 (low income) with social rate and Level 3 (Average income) with a subsidized consumption ceiling.

The YPF company put into operation the Bajo del Toro Thermal Power Plant located in Rincón de los Sauces in the province of Nuequén, whose purpose is to supply energy to the company Genesis Digital Assets Limited (GDA), which is dedicated to bitcoin mining.

The Bajo del Toro UTE is made up of YPF, Equinor and YPF Luz, and has an installed power capacity of 7 MW and 1 MW of back-up.

“In this framework, an energy sale agreement was signed with Genesis Digital Assets that authorizes the installation of a data center within the plant located in Rincón de los Sauces and supplies 1,200 cryptocurrency mining equipment,” the company reported this Tuesday. company in a press release.

According to the report, “this initiative allows us to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, make efficient use of energy, and monetize flare gas, which otherwise would have been vented into the atmosphere.”

“The gas is reused to generate electrical energy that is destined for a new industry such as bitcoin mining, highly energy demanding, without affecting the availability of the country’s electrical energy network and contributing to a sustainable solution,” stated YPF Luz. .

Martín Mandarano, CEO of YPF Luz commented: “In 2022 we were the first Argentine company to generate electrical energy for cryptocurrency mining from flare gas, an innovative solution in line with YPF’s energy transition needs.”

He added that “this project with GDA allows us to bring YPF and Equinor, two companies committed to reducing the carbon footprint of their exploration activities, an adaptable and sustainable flare gas use solution.”

Abdumalik Mirakhmedov, CEO of GDA, considered that “Argentina is an important country for Bitcoin mining, given its abundance of energy sources and business-friendly environment.
