GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – The Gators rebounded off a demoralizing series loss to No. 3 Tennessee, it was their fifth straight series loss. The pitching staff did their job and knocked off South Florida, 4-1.
Right out the gate, Liam Peterson finds a way out of a bases loaded situation, but this is a bullpen game for the (25-23) Gators. After Jac Caglianone smokes his 27th homer of the season to take a 1-0 lead. Cade Fisher goes 2 2/3 innings and didn’t give up a run.
At the bottom of the second, Hayden Yost is tagged out on a double play. But, Brody Donay scores and UF leads 2-0. At the bottom of the third inning, Luke Heyman makes it to first off a throwing error and Caglianone comes home to score and makes it a 3-0 lead.
USF continues to have issues against the Gators until the top of the 6th where they get on. the board off to just homer, 3-1.
At the bottom of the eighth, the Gators garner some insurance off Tyler Shelnut’s RBI double to increase their lead to 4-1.
Brandon Neely returns to the closer role and shuts down the (23-25) Bulls. Neely records his second save of the season in the win.
Head coach Kevin O’Sullivan said about the pitching, “But when we go into a game and you can go to Fisher Jameson and you can go to McNeillie and you have Neely on the backend and Cade Fisher comes in with those 2 2/3 , he’s been working hard on his delivery. And he’s standing taller on his back side of him and I thought he had more angle to his stuff of him instead of east and west. I thought he had more tilt to his slider tonight. “It’s certainly a step in the right direction and hopefully he can continue doing this into the weekend.”
The Gator pitching staff through six pitchers only gave up one run off five hits with seven strikeouts.
