Images generated by artificial intelligence (AI) of Katy Perry and Rihanna at the Met Gala went viral on social networks.

Neither singer was present at Monday night’s fashion event at NYbut that did not stop false images of them from circulating on xformerly called Twitter.

Perry shared two fake images of herself on instagram and revealed that even his mother had been deceived.

This can get much more serious

Analysis by Marianna Spring, disinformation and social media correspondent

Why does this matter? After all, this is the red carpet, not an election.

Well, this tells us how AI-generated content is becoming more and more compelling. They even managed to fool Katy Perry’s own mother.

The telltale signs are still there; a photographer with half his head missing, doubtful fingers on another, and the rug itself is from 2018.

But it still feels like an improvement over some of the other AI-generated images that have gone viral.

And all this can get much more serious.

In recent months, I have investigated how AI-generated images of former US President Donald Trump with black voters (some satirical, some not) were created and shared by his supporters before the election.

And how fake AI-generated audio from the mayor of London, which sounded like a secret recording, falsely suggested he was moving ceremonies for a war memorial holiday to accommodate a pro-Palestinian march.

These tactics will be in play on our social networks in the coming months, so this is a reminder to put our detective skills to the test.
