Francisco González, president of the National Auto Parts Industry, commented that at the beginning of 2024 the expectation was an industry growth of between 3 and 4% but now this is 8% percent. Among the factors that have driven it are geopolitics and nearshoring.

WANT IT, Qro. (05/07/2024).-Mexico will soon be making PCBs (printed circuit board) with combined investments with Taiwan, reported Francisco González, Executive President of the National Auto Parts Industry (INA).

After participating in the inauguration of the second edition of the International Automotive Industry Supply Summit in Querétaro, González explained that the idea is that a part of the chips that will be made in the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) company located in Arizona, United States, arrive in Mexico and be scheduled.

“It’s a series of things, Mexico and Taiwan are going to be well integrated in the automotive sector’s offer for electromobility,” said González. Last Monday, the Ministry of Economy met together with the Business Coordinating Council with a mission of Taiwanese companies, led by the Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers Association (TEEMA).

“That was the topic of the meeting yesterday, we are very advanced,” explained the INA director. “We have four more days of meetings; What the Secretary of Economy (Raquel Buenrostro) offered was to facilitate the arrival of companies to Mexico, to present to them the part of the Isthmus but to present in general terms how attractive Mexico can be due to its network of international treaties,” she explained.

In relation to a document being prepared by the Mexico-United States Foundation for Science (Fumec), he explained that “what they are looking for is what points in the chip production chain can be integrated in Mexico and the ease of doing so. .

“Specifically, it is development on the chip; We are not going to do this in itself in Mexico because it is very expensive, it takes a lot of money to build it, but the idea is that from there we will have a basis to know the strengths of each state and where we need to train more people.

“For everything that is development, new people are required in the sense of reskilling, that is, those who already exist will have to take new courses and we are very happy because it is going to change the panorama for Mexican talent.”

He said that this will happen in cities like Mexico, Guadalajara, León or states like Querétaro. He clarified that they have a list of factors for areas of opportunity and they landed it in the curriculum of the National Polytechnic Institute.

Happy problems

The Executive President of the INA explained that they now have three happy problems on which it has to focus: the first is the strong growth and in particular the transfer part that with the restriction of schedules for security has often compromised the supply chain. “We have been working with the different regions that have problems and they have been resolved,” he said.

The second point is the clean energy that is needed. Suppliers who want to sell to an OM (original manufacture), to an assembly company, they will have to have clean energy in their processes, so we are not only talking about the lack of energy but about a step further. The third aspect is the 15 percent annual growth in auto parts production as it has brought a need for more talent.

8% growth

González commented that at the beginning of 2024 the expectation was an industry growth of between 3 and 4 percent, but now this is 8 percent and “we continue to grow.” Among the factors that have driven it are the geopolitical part, the nearshoring or relocation of companies that the Free Trade Agreement is generating, among others.

In auto parts production, Mexico occupies fourth place worldwide; In exports it is between third and fourth place, depending on the year. Of its production, 87 percent is exported to the United States and 3.1 percent to Canada.

“90 percent goes to North America, we are North America, it stays with us, then these pieces leave and return seven times, we also have China, Brazil, Europe, Japan and Korea as destinations, we are diversified,” he stated.
