A 22-year-old Indian-origin MTech student was stabbed to death in Australia during a fight between some Indian students.

Two brothers, identified as Abhijeet and Robin Gartan, have been arrested in New South Wales’ Goulburn on Tuesday.

The arrest comes two days after the fatal stabbing of Navjeet Sandhu in Ormond’s Melbourne suburb, according to officials.

What happened?

Navjeet Sandhu, a native of Karnal’s Gagsina village, was “fatally stabbed in the chest” with a knife by another student when he was trying to mediate a confrontation in a rent-related dispute between some Indian students, his father, Jitender Singh, told reporters in Karnal.

Sandhu’s 30-year-old friend, named Shravan, also sustained injuries in the incident.

Sandhu’s uncle Yashvir Singh was quoted by PTI as saying, “Sandhu’s friend (another Indian student) had asked him to accompany him to his house to pick up his belongings as he had a car. While his friend went inside, Sandhu heard some shouting and saw there was a fight. When Sandhu tried to intervene asking them not to fight, he was fatally stabbed in the chest with a knife.”

According to the Indian Express, which quoted the victim’s father, Shravan shared the house with Abhijeet and Robin Gartan.

Following reports of the dispute, emergency services were called at about 1 am on Sunday, the statement by Victoria police said.

Upon arrival, the two men were located with stab wounds, the report said.

Singh told the family got information about the incident early Sunday morning.

The 22-year-old was a brilliant student and was to join his family in July for vacations, his uncle, who’ll retire from the Army in July, said, as per News18.

Sandhu arrived in Australia on a study visa in November 2022 to pursue an MTech degree in Melbourne.

His father, a farmer, had sold one-and-a-half acres of their land to fund his education.

Who are the accused?

• Abhijeet, 26, and Gartan, 27, were arrested on Tuesday for fatally stabbing the 22-year-old student.

• “Brothers Abhijeet and Robin Gartan were arrested in Goulburn this morning with the assistance of NSW Police,” Victoria Police media department head Natalie Webster said in a statement shared with The Quint.

• Victoria detectives traveled to Goulburn for a court hearing scheduled for Wednesday at the local Goulburn court. The investigators will apply to extradite them back to Victoria, as per the statement.

• The brothers are residents of Bastara village in Karnal.

• The duo had been on the run since Sunday.

• Earlier, Victoria Police’s Homicide Squad detectives had released details and images of the two men.

• The officials described both as being 170 centimeters tall with a solid build and black hair.

• Before being arrested, the two were believed to be traveling in a stolen 2014 white Toyota Camry sedan.
