AfriForum says it will continue monitoring the police investigation into the murder of DA uMngeni Municipality chief whip Nhlalayenza Ndlovu, who was gunned down at his Mpophomeni home in December last year.

Speaking to The Witness at the Howick Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, advocate Gerrie Nel, who is leading the AfriForum unit, said they would continue to monitor the investigation. Nel said they continued gathering evidence for their own investigation in Howick on Wednesday.

The organization has named a local Induna as their main suspect in the murder. The induna is wanted by police on other murder and attempted murder charges.

“The police made it clear that he’s a suspect in two other matters and what bothers us the most is that he was arrested in the matter and the police allowed him out on bail without bringing these other matters [against him]. That, we think, is a bit peculiar, but we will still be monitoring this investigation,” said Nel.

He said they will meet with the police if they get a chance and will issue more on their investigation within the next week. “We think this is an important matter and that the police should give their attention to this matter, as they do to all matters, but we don’t think they are.

If we knew where he is we would’ve informed the police, but I don’t know if they would’ve arrested him. I don’t know what they are doing or how they are going about this investigation, but certainly there’s something peculiar

The court previously issued a warrant of arrest for the induna, who is from the Mpophomeni area.

He was initially arrested on charges of being in possession of stolen electrical transformers in January and released on R1 500 bail.

He was expected to appear in court on April 6, but submitted a sick note to the court through his attorney.

A week later, the police national task team responsible for investigating political killings issued a warrant for his arrest on charges of murder and an attempted murder, committed in Impendle, about 60 kilometers from Howick.

AfriForum later named him as their key suspect in Ndlovu’s murder after the Democratic Alliance appointed AfriForum and its investigations unit to help probe Ndlovu’s murder.

The induna was due to appear at the Howick Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday for his electrical transformers theft case, but as expected, failed to pitch. His attorney said he did not know the whereabouts of his client and withdrew from the case.

SAPS said he was last seen in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape and further asked the public to assist them in locating the man.
