From this Monday until next day, members of the NASA team will carry out 20 simulated moonwalk operations of the Artemis program in the volcanic fields of San Francisco, near Flagstaff, Arizona, with astronauts Kate Rubins and Andre Douglas as crew. The activities are the fifth in a series since April 2022 of simulated moonwalks for Artemis Generation astronauts and teams planning future exploration of the lunar surface.

There are four simulated moonwalks and six high-tech tours scheduled for this week. The teams continue to evolve astronaut training and the crew will wear mock-ups of spacesuits as they test hardware, capabilities and technologies to conduct operations in a simulated lunar environment for the Artemis III mission and beyond.

Through Artemis, NASA will send astronauts, including the first woman, the first person of color and the first international associate astronaut, to explore the moon in search of scientific discoveries, technological evolution, economic benefits and to lay the foundations for manned missions to Mars.

Earth mission simulations help prepare humans for the challenges of deep space exploration and journeys into the cosmos.
