Prison inmate accused of first-degree murder in 2017 North Omaha homicide

A Nebraska state prison inmate has been served an arrest warrant for his alleged involvement in a 2017 North Omaha homicide.

Wilbert Smith, 32, is suspected of first-degree murder in the shooting death of 21-year-old Xavier Bass on Nov. 5, 2017. Bass died after being shot inside a vehicle on the North Freeway near the Hamilton Street exit. A 24-year-old man was also injured in the shooting and related crash.

Smith is currently serving a prison sentence for unrelated drug charges at the Reception and Treatment Center in Lincoln, according to Nebraska Department of Corrections records.
