David Copperfield, the iconic magician of the 90s, accused of multiple sexual abuses

David Copperfield is American and 61 years old. He knew how to use growing globalization to gain worldwide fame with his shows that were characterized by enormous challenges and great staging. Furthermore, he was in a relationship with Claudia Schifferthe super model of the 90s.

From iconic magician to accused abuser

David Copperfield would have been responsible for numerous cases of sexual abuse that continued for almost 35 years. According to the newspaper “The Guardian”, there are at least 16 cases filed against the American magician. Most of them are women who say they were minors when the abuse occurred. Even, One of the complaints that emerged was made by a woman who at that time was only 15 years old.

The cases filed against Copperfield say that some of this abuse and touching even occurred while he was performing his bombastic live presentations. Copperfield’s lawyers say the allegations “They are not only completely false but also totally implausible.”

Another cause even says that he would have drugged three women before having sexual relations with them, so it would be clear that they were not in a position to give their consent.

The “#me too” movement encouraged complaints against Copperfield

The British media says that the women who made these accusations took the courage to go to court against the illusionist thanks to everything that could be known after the movement “#me too”. The Guardian is examining these allegations as part of a series of articles that have been based on interviews with more than 100 people and judicial and police records. The women, for the most part, knew him through his work as one of the most successful artists in the world and that in that situation the abuses occurred that they later decided to report.

David Copperfield, the wizard of globalization

David Copperfield was fascinated by magic since he was a child. And then he transformed it into his livelihood. But in the late ’80s he found a formula that brought him world fame: great magic tricks and illusions, broadcast live – to the entire world – thanks to the explosion of globalization.

Theaters, television studios and even outdoor places were transformed into special places to perform unexpected tricks that amazed the world. No longer just guessing cards or taking flowers from a galley. David Copperfield could levitate and float around a stage and make trains or planes disappear.

Even at the height of his career, He put on an open-air show in New York, in which he made the Statue of Liberty herself disappear.

Furthermore, throughout that time, he was in a relationship with Claudia Schiffer, the most famous model of the 90s.

But then came some inconveniences to his work. His “tricks” were so challenging to viewers that many tried to imitate them. As they could be dangerous by not knowing the “illusion technique”, justice forced him to reveal one of his best kept secrets.

It was known, for example, the system of mirrors he used to reorient light and simulate huge objects disappearing. Or the “invisible” harnesses (so commonly used in film effects) that allowed him to give the sensation of being able to fly in closed spaces.

However, David Copperfield reinvented himself and continues to give shows to this day, although he is almost limited to the United States.

One day, Copperfield arrived in Argentina

His world fame could not be ignored in our country. There was a very important element that helped us get to know him personally in our country. In its heyday, in the 90s, convertibility – one peso, one dollar – made hiring the most famous magician on the planet accessible to businessmen.

He was an “exclusive artist” for a television channel and performed several shows in one of the best-known theaters on Corrientes Avenue.

Now, he’s in trouble, but not to get out of a magic box in which he’s chained. Complaints are a serious and repeated cause of sexual abuse. He had a preview when an NGO he helps “Save de Children” canceled one of his presentations. The reason? Copperfield appeared among those in close contact with Jeffrey Epsteinthe millionaire who was taken to prison – where he died in 2019 – for being an abuser and having a network for that aberrant crime.

The accusation of 16 women, like his illusions in the 90s, have already gone around the world. His lawyers allege that he has never been accused of any crime. He now does and must defend himself in court.
