With 1,428 species of birds recorded, Peru positioned itself as the second country in the world with the highest number of birds sighted in a single day.

In Peru, a total of 1,428 species of birds were recorded on May 11, thanks to the active participation of birders and ornithologists at the national level organized in groups, associations or clubs, together with park rangers, specialists, volunteers and leaders. of the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (Sernanp), in the 77 protected natural areas of national administration.

According to data recorded on the eBird platform, a total of 7,725 species of birds were recorded worldwide, of this total Peru contributed with the registration of about 19%, consolidating itself as one of the main destinations for bird watching. on an international level.

In this important achievement, the active participation of Sernanp staff was key to registering a total of 1,094 species in protected natural areas, which represents 77% of records at the national level. Likewise, it is important to highlight that thanks to the efforts of Sernanp and collaborators, 378 lists were registered.

In this way, at the Peruvian level, Sernanp, as an organized group, occupied first place both in registered lists and in the number of species sighted during this international event, thus highlighting the great potential of protected natural areas for the national tourist offer in bird watching and valuing the biodiversity they contain.

As for the protected natural areas of Peru, those that recorded the greatest number of birds and lists were the national parks of Manú, Bahuaja Sonene and the Tambopata national reserve.
