Pune: A 55-year-old gift item supplier from Bhawani Peth lost Rs 1.2 crore in an online share trading fraud between Feb 1 and April 2 this year.He filed a complaint with the city’s cybercrime police on Thursday. He stated in the complaint that he came across a link on a social media site that was offering handsome returns on trading shares online. “The crooks told him to join a messaging application where members of the group were involved in online share trading. The members discussed rates of high returns. After the victim showed interest in investment, the crooks asked him to download an application that reflected share trading and investment on screen,” Suresh Shinde, senior inspector, said. Shinde said the crooks told the victim to transfer money to different accounts. He transferred the money in nine transactions using his and his family members’ bank accounts. They, however, did not give the victim the promised returns. The crooks terminated all communication with the victim, he said. The victim did not register a complaint instantly because the application was showing details of the amount invested and the returns he would receive. He, however, could not access the money. The police have frozen the crooks’ bank account with Rs 4 lakh in it at Navi Mumbai. An FIR pertaining to cheating was registered with the cybercrime police. “We have sought details from the social media site, the bank, and the online share trading application about all the communication and transactions. “We will act accordingly,” he said.
