Former President of the United States, Donald Trump, currently recognized as facing criminal charges in four jurisdictions in the country, announced that his campaign to run for President of the United States in 2024 would accept donations in cryptocurrencies.

According to a notice published on May 21, Donald Trump 2024 announced that it has launched a fundraising page for “eligible individuals” to donate in cryptocurrencies using the “Coinbase Commerce” platform. It is important to note that Trump’s crypto donation website displays logos for Bitcoin, Ethereum, Dogecoin, SHIB, USDC, XRP, Solana, Cardano and Avalanche.

“Today’s announcement reflects President Trump’s commitment to an agenda that values freedom over socialist government control.” He indicated the announcement. “This addition to President Trump’s already innovative digital fundraising operation marks the first time a major party presidential candidate has embraced cryptocurrencies for donations,” the statement added.

Notably, the recent move comes after a May 8 dinner for his followers who purchased non-fungible tokens (NFTs) inspired by the mug shot of his surrender in a Georgia jail. At this dinner, Donald Trump told those present that he would ensure that donations to his campaign could be made directly in cryptocurrencies.

“The effort to reduce government control over Americans’ financial decision-making is part of a seismic shift toward freedom.” Donald Trump’s official statement said.

According to various polls, less than six months before Election Day, Donald Trump is the favorite candidate for the presidency of the United States, facing current president Joe Biden, who represents the Democratic Party.

Donald Trump’s Crypto Donations Could Change the American Political Landscape

It should be noted that on May 15, candidate Donald Trump responded in X to a challenge from President Joe Biden. In addition, Trump also agreed to meet on June 27 and September 10 to hold a debate with Joe Biden on the news platforms CNN and ABC, respectively.

However, although the terms have not been finalized, this debate marks the first time that both candidates have faced each other face to face since 2020.

It is important to note that despite accepting crypto donations, Trump’s campaign website does not specifically mention Blockchain technology. On the other hand, current President Joe Biden has rarely issued public statements on cryptocurrencies, but signed an executive order in 2022 to establish a regulatory framework for digital assets.

Likewise, Trump’s recent announcement of crypto donations comes as the jury in his criminal trial in New York prepares for deliberations scheduled to take place next week.

For reference, former President Donald Trump has had to appear in person in a Manhattan court on the grounds of “falsifying business documents” for a payment of $130,000 to adult film star “Stormy Daniels.” In addition, the Republican candidate also faces charges in Georgia and the District of Columbia for allegedly “attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 elections” and in Florida for allegedly “handling classified documents.”

On the other hand, the emergence of cryptocurrencies as an economic driver in political campaigns could be changing the “anti-crypto” attitude of Democrats. An example of this is the recent decision by the Democratic leaders of the US House of Representatives to “not pressure its members” to support an upcoming bill that aims to promote cryptocurrency regulation.
