The Chicago area will see some sunshine over Memorial Day weekend, but there could also be a lot of rain in the forecast that could affect your plans.

Multiple severe weather threats will emerge throughout the weekend, beginning Friday afternoon across the region.

The main threats with any storm that develops will be gusty winds, heavy rain and large hail, but tornadoes cannot be ruled out, according to the Storm Prediction Center.

Here’s the day-by-day forecast from the NBC 5 Storm Team.

FRIDAY

A severe weather threat will be included in the forecast on Friday, and the SPC is predicting a “slight” chance of damaging storms during the day.

According to the NBC 5 Storm Team, the storms’ arrival time has yet to be determined, with some models indicating an early afternoon arrival and others suggesting their impacts a little later in the day. Still, damaging winds and heavy rain could be the main threats, with gusts of up to 60 miles per hour possible. If supercells form, there is also a chance of hail, along with a non-zero chance of tornadoes forming in different parts of the area.

Some scattered showers and storms could affect the region again in the late afternoon and disappear by midnight.

SATURDAY

Probably the best weather day of the weekend will be Saturday, with mostly sunny skies and highs in the mid to upper 70s across the area.

SUNDAY

Rain chances will return strongly on Sunday, with showers and thunderstorms likely for most of the day.

Once again the possibility of severe weather conditions will be included in the forecast, with threats of heavy rain, gusty winds and hail. The National Weather Service cites the possibility of flooding in its forecast, urging drivers to use caution when traveling during the afternoon hours.

Widespread rain could cause headaches in Chicago in the White Sox series finale against the Baltimore Orioles, as well as the Indianapolis 500 in Indiana.

MONDAY

Rain is expected to begin early in the day, paving the way for cooler, drier conditions through most of the afternoon.

Highs on Monday are only expected to reach 70 degrees across much of the area, with colder readings possible in areas near the lake.
