Peru enjoys a privileged position by having large mineral and gas reserves, key components for the energy transition that the world is going through, as noted Maria Julia AybarPeru general director of Hunt Oil Companyduring his participation in the Symposium – XV International Mining Meeting, organized by the National Society of Mining, Petroleum and Energy (SNMPE).

“Peru’s large copper reserves are key to the energy transition. Furthermore, it is important to highlight that natural gas is a fundamental piece to continue promoting the use of renewable energies,” he added.

For his part, Simone Sciamanna, director of the Repsol Exploration Peru Business Unit, pointed out that natural gas is positioned as a key transition energy in the current global context.

“Currently 50% of gas demand comes from the domestic market, therefore, this natural resource can be offered and increase demand. Just as an example, thermoelectric generation plants and the massification of gas are large markets that would contribute to this end,” he detailed.

Meanwhile, the general manager of Colbun, José Ignacio Escobar, pointed out that Peru has the resources and human talent to be an important player and be a leader in the face of the current energy transition in the world. “This great phenomenon is going to be copper no matter what, but the projects in Peru are taking a long time. Today in the world there is much more demand for minerals than projects and Peru has an important mining portfolio that we must work to value and take advantage of the current context.”he added.

Finally, Adolfo Heeren, general manager of Anglo American-Quellaveco, stated that decarbonization is a huge challenge worldwide. “Copper plays an important role and in Peru we are well positioned in CO2 emissions,” Indian.

“However, it is also one of the most vulnerable countries because we have many ecosystems. Therefore, we must have the commitment as a country to move forward since we are a territory with large copper reserves.”he added.
