Ifigenia Martha Martínez y Hernández, born on June 16, 1930 in Mexico City, is a renowned Mexican politician, economist, professor and diplomat. She was affiliated with the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), she was one of the founders of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) together with Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas and Porfirio Muñoz Ledo.

Throughout his career, Martínez has been federal representative on three occasions and senator in several legislatures, standing out in the LIV Legislature from 1988 to 1991. Since September 1, 2018, she has been a senator to the Congress of the Union for the National List and president of the Board of Deans.

Together with Cárdenas and Muñoz Ledo, he headed the Democratic Current and resigned from the PRI to found the PRD. She was the first senator of the republic elected by the Federal District representing an opposition party and held various roles within the PRD, including vice president of the Board of Directors and vice coordinator of the parliamentary group.

Disenchanted by the lack of a large coalition of left-wing parties, Martínez distanced herself from the PRD and supported Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) in his third presidential candidacy. In 2018, accompanied AMLO to his inauguration as president.

She has received various awards, including the National Economics Award in 1960 and “Woman of the Year” in 1966. She is a member of the advisory council of UNICEF and the UNAM Foundation, among other roles.
