The Italian Jannik Sinner, world number 2, advanced to the quarterfinals of Roland Garros on Sunday, after defeating the local idol Corentin Moutet (N.79) by 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1, leaving a set along the way.

The 22-year-old manages to reach the quarterfinals on the Parisian clay court for the second time in his career, after being eliminated at that point by Rafael Nadal in 2020.

Opposite him was Moutet, whose best result in a Grand Slam so far was the eighth achieved at the 2023 US Open but who for much of the match dreamed of reaching the quarterfinals before an audience totally dedicated to his cause.

Scheduled for the night session on the Philippe Chatrier court, the support from the stands was unidirectional towards the 25-year-old tennis player born a few kilometers from the Roland Garros complex.

But despite winning the first set, using continuous drops that forced Sinner to run towards the net, Moutet was gradually overwhelmed by a clearly superior opponent.

Thus, and after 2 hours and 41 minutes, the Italian once again demonstrated why he is one of the favorites to lift the ‘Musketeers Cup’ next Sunday, just five months after his first Grand Slam in Melbourne.
