This Thursday the Roland Garros semifinals began in the women’s team. In the first match of the day, the two top candidates to win the Parisian grand slam met: Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff. The latter – current number 3 in the world – will become number 2 next Monday since the defeat of Aryna Sabalenka in the quarterfinals will cause her to drop one place in the ranking and the North American will rise.

Probably the most anticipated duel of the entire Roland Garros – in the women’s draw – was the probable final between Swiatek – number 1 in the WTA ranking – and Sabalenka, but since the Belarusian was eliminated, the match that generated the greatest expectations in Paris was the starring Swiatek and Gauff. In the history between them, the Pole dominated 10 to 1 before the start of the semifinal.

An umpire error and Gauff’s tears

Iga Swiatek is a machine on the court and easily won the first set by winning by a resounding 6 to 2. Gauff seemed a little nervous and unable to display her game. But in tennis, each set is a new world and that’s how the North American took it, starting ahead 2 to 1, maintaining her serve and seeking to break the Pole’s. When Coco was up 15 to 0, The judge made a serious mistake. A line judge called a serve that was good wrong, the judge corrected her teammate’s decision, but she gave the point to Swiatek.

Gauff, who had swung and was going to hit, but didn’t because they called out, complained. That made the North American approach the umpire’s chair and complain about the situation. But after a heated argument, the world number 3 returned to her place and she took some time before returning to the court. The camera took her from the front and on several occasions she wiped away tears of helplessness. Finally, Coco Gauff managed to break the Pole’s serve.
