Ineter confirms “small explosion” at the San Cristóbal Volcano

The San Cristóbal volcano, located in Chinandega, at around 3:13 in the afternoon on June 7, recorded “a small explosion,” confirmed the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (Ineter), highlighting that so far it is “not “It represents a greater danger to the population.”

The authorities detailed that the magnitude of this explosion fell into the “low” category and the column of gases and ash that accompanied it was 3 kilometers above the level of the mouth of the colossus crater.

Ashes did not affect surrounding homes

The preliminary report from Ineter, published in official media, also indicates that the ashes expelled by the San Cristóbal volcano fell towards the northwest of the colossus, but did not affect the surrounding communities.

In addition, they assure that the inhabitants of these areas near the colossus “remain calm, although constant surveillance is maintained for any change.”

The Ineter authorities highlighted that “permanent surveillance is maintained on the main active volcanoes in the country” and will report “any change in their behavior that puts the population in danger.”

Extreme challenge could be suspended

Hours before this explosion on June 7, the Nicaraguan Institute of Tourism (Intur) announced an “extreme challenge” that consists of climbing the San Cristóbal volcano in groups.

The activity is scheduled for next June 16. Participants would have, according to the call, to register at the Intur offices in Chinandega.

Until now, the Ineter authorities have not indicated whether they will advise suspending the ascents to the crater of the San Cristóbal volcano, which would postpone the extreme challenge promoted by Intur.

In the last month, the Concepción volcano on Ometepe Island has also shown an increase in its activity, presenting at least three explosions that have also been categorized by Ineter as low or moderate. This increase in activity even led authorities to recommend that ascents to the crater of the colossus be avoided.
