The impact of the Milei “rate” in the Province: electricity and gas will cost between 80% and 600% more

The national government determined the increases in electricity and gas with a reduction in subsidies. In the Buenos Aires territory, low-income households will be the most affected, explained the Undersecretary of Energy of the province of Buenos Aires, Gastón Ghioni.

The Buenos Aires Government announced yesterday that the reduction of consumption subsidies in the rates of electricity and gas services, which was announced last week by the administration of Javier Milei, will have an impact of up to 600% on bills.

In the framework of a press conference, the Undersecretary of Energy, Gastón Ghioni, reported that in the next electricity bills there will be increases of between 14%, for clients with higher incomes, and 80% for those with lower resources, while the bills of those who fall into the N3 segment, who are those with average income, will have an increase of around 69%.

“The new increase in electricity rates applied by the national government has the peculiarity of going in a regressive sense: it aims to remove subsidies from the middle and low income sectors,” explained the Buenos Aires official.

In addition, he noted that “the national government established that families benefiting from the social rate have 60 days to register and request to continue in this segment.” And in that sense, he added: “From the province of Buenos Aires we are already working with mayors, companies and distributors in a campaign to inform Buenos Aires users of this new provision, with the aim that they can preserve their social rate.”

What will be the impact of the increase in electricity for the people of Buenos Aires?

It is important to remember that Edenor and Edesur are distribution companies under the orbit of the Nation, so they are not included among the increases of the province of Buenos Aires, despite the fact that they provide service in the AMBA. Therefore, the indicated increases will apply to EDEA, EDEN, EDES and Edelap.

N1 (high income): Bills for residential users will increase by an average of 14%. EDEA users will pay from $22,426 for a consumption of 150 kWh per month to $26,042; those of EDEN from $24,795 to $28,374; those of EDES from $26,128 to $29,707 and those of Edelap from $22,936 to $26,634.

N2 (low income): they will be the sector hardest hit by the increases, which on average will reach 80%. EDEA users will pay from $9,186 for a consumption of 150 kWh per month to $14,675; those of EDEN from 11,597 to $17,046; those of EDES from 12,990 to $18,424 and those of Edelap from $8,133 to $13,965.

N3 (average income): They will have an increase of 69% on average. EDEA users will pay from $9,371 for a consumption of 150 kWh per month to $17,161; those of EDEN from $11,781 to $19,523; those of EDES from $13,174 to $20,891 and those of Edelap from $8,322 to $16,740.

How much will gas rise in the province of Buenos Aires?

In the case of gas, the province of Buenos Aires has no authority or jurisdiction, so the increases will be identical to the tariff table defined by the National Government, and will be reflected in the bills of both Camuzzi Gas Pampeana and Metrogas.

Like the electricity rate, it is segmented by income. And the average rate table will be as follows:

N1 (high income): the average increase will be 299%: a residential user in category R31 will go from paying $11,285 to $46,449, while in Metrogas the average bill will go from $13,677 to $56,467.

N2 (low income): The average increase will be 604%: a residential user in category R31 will go from paying $4,896 to $39,661, while in Metrogas the average bill will go from $6,813 to $49,610.

N3 (average income): the average increase will be 367%: a residential user in category R31 will go from paying $8,736 to $40,615, while in Metrogas the average bill will go from $10,721 to $50,574.
