Yesterday the hare jumped, as that one would say. Far from ending a good event, Xbox closed its Xbox Games Showcase in a mammoth way by announcing not only that we return to the world of Gears of War, but we will do it with a prequel. E-Day will take us to Emergence Day, the first moment in which humanity contacted the Locust that emerged from the earth. However, and among the many details that have been revealed in the early hours of today as part of the various interviews with the studio, The Coalition has confirmed that will be maintained strict to a closed design, nothing open world or similar.

Watching Dom and Marcus share battles not only satisfied our inner children or teenagers, but the idea of revisiting the very origins of the Locust War 14 years before the first Gears of War It was cathartic for more than one. In this context of catharsis and, unfortunately, waiting until a release date that is currently unknown to us, journalist Stephen Totilo of GameFile has met with Nicole Fawcettedirector of the Gears of War franchise, to break down some details of what we can expect in the game.

While it is true that there are still years left to play it, Fawcette was clear with Totilo and, therefore, with the players: The Coalition has worked with its sights set on satisfying newbies and veterans of the saga. This means that the idea of taking us to E-Day as a very important moment in the history of Gears of War will bring together those who have followed the license since 2008 or since its jump to the new sub-saga with Gears of War 4.

However, that classic spirit has also permeated the DNA of the game and Gears of War: E-Day will be completely linear, leaving aside any experiment with open or semi-open world maps. Although it is something unrelated to 95% of the saga as a whole, Gears 5 played with large scenarios to encourage players to explore, but also offer us a different approach to the saga. This is something that didn’t satisfy many players, and although it wasn’t a full-fledged open world, perhaps those not too happy about taking the skiff will be much happier now.

This entire prequel will take place in the same city

If you are fans of the saga you will know that the Earth exists in this universe, but the planet Sera is the undisputed protagonist of the license. Since this prequel will take us to Emergence Day, there will be no strange experiments or diffuse settings, but only one: Kalona. This city, which we have not visited in the saga and whose appearance is limited to the novel Gears of War: Aspho Fields, will serve as a battlefield for the game, and we will not leave from here.

Fawcette has highlighted that The Coalition has sought to condense the entire story in a city plagued by the appearance of the Locust and that will see their relentless wrath hit every street. In a concept that reminds us, of course, of that Mad World from the original Gears of War, E-Day will take advantage of the entire city of Kalona for its history, but the truth is that even the city will be another protagonist. Thanks to Unreal Engine 5, the city will have destructible elements of the environment, something that will enhance the dynamism in battles beyond simply withstanding the onslaught under cover.

In 3DGames | Your Snake will be different from mine when we finish the remake of Metal Gear Solid 3. The damage system will make each wound permanent on the body

In 3DGames | Some believe the Gears of War E-Day ad is CGI, and it’s Geoff Keighley’s fault. But the reality is that it represents well what we will see in the game
