Rains in Florida, USA leave severe flooding and canceled flights

The mayor of Miami-Dade declared a state of emergency in response to flooding in the area.

The heavy rains hitting the south of the state of Florida, USA, have caused flooding, road closures, suspension of classes and the cancellation of around 300 flights on Wednesday, especially the Fort Lauderdale airport.

The threat of rain is estimated until next Saturday due to the possibility of the development of a tropical depression in the western Gulf of Mexico next week.

The climate phenomenon is expected to affect, in addition to the state of Florida, the entities of Texas and other regions near the Gulf of Mexico, according to US meteorological authorities.

The rains that have fallen on the southern US state have affected Miami-Dade and Broward counties, in southeastern Florida. In these counties several universities have announced the closure of classes.

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava declared a local state of emergency on Wednesday in response to flooding in the area.

“As our departments work to keep residents and businesses safe, this is a necessary step to protect the health, safety and well-being of our entire community,” the mayor said through her social network X.

According to the Flightaware platform, which counts canceled and delayed flights, it counted 285 canceled flights at the Miami and Fort Lauderdale airports.

The southeastern coast of Florida has also been affected since Tuesday, June 11, with flooding in the Sarasota area.
