The Departments of Beaches and Citizen Safety of the Telde City Council have agreed this Sunday to reopen Melenara beach to bathing “after the departure of the shark that approached the coast” of the municipality this Saturday.

This has been reported by the councilors María Calderín and Miguel Rodríguez, who have assured “that at this moment there is no danger for bathers.”

Even so, the services of the Local Police, Civil Protection and Proactiva, a company that provides lifesaving services on the municipality’s coast, work in a coordinated manner to supervise that the animal does not approach again.

This Saturday the prevention protocol had to be activated in response to the sighting of a shark near the Teltense coast, so the red flag was raised on the beach mast and bathers were evacuated from the water.

Early this Sunday, the members of Proactiva verified that the animal was no longer in the vicinity with a sweep on a jet ski, assisted by the aerial camera of the drone unit (Unidron) of the Telde Local Police that directed by Juan José Florido.

In this way, at 10:00 a.m. the green flag was raised.

Florido assured Calderín and Rodríguez this Sunday that “the rapprochement has been a specific event” and that “the situation this Sunday has returned to its usual calm.”

Several people recorded and shared images of the shark on social networks as it approached the sand, to the surprise of the bathers. The animal was identified as a hammerhead shark.
