The Peace Summit in Switzerland culminated: What agreements did the nations reach?

The Peace Summit held in Switzerland concluded this Sunday, June 16 in Switzerland. The nations reached several important points, such as nuclear security, food security, and release of prisoners of war.

Agreements reached between nations

The day began on June 15 with the speech of the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky: “Everything that is agreed upon at the summit will be part of the process of establishing peace. “We will witness how history is made.”

At the close of the event, the vast majority of nations had common points and agreed to follow a roadmap on several issues, mainly on the paths to solving the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which has been going on for more than two years.

The Peace Summit had the participation of 92 states, 57 of which were represented by heads of State and Government.

One of the most important points on which they reached an agreement was nuclear security. In a statement, the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs stated that “any use of nuclear energy and nuclear facilities must be safe, secure and environmentally sound.”

Hand in hand with this point, nations agreed that nuclear power plants in Ukraine must operate safely under the country’s full sovereign control, in accordance with the principles of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA): “Any threat or use of weapons nuclear weapons in the context of the ongoing war against Ukraine is inadmissible.”

The nations that signed the agreements

On the other hand, the countries concluded that global food security depends on the uninterrupted manufacturing and supply of food products. In this order of ideas, they agreed that commercial navigation must be free, full and safe on all maritime bridges that cross the Black and Azov seas.

“Attacks on merchant ships in ports, as well as on civilian ports and civilian port infrastructure, are unacceptable. Food safety should not become a weapon in any way. Ukrainian agricultural products must be delivered safely and free of charge to interested third countries,” the Federal Department stated.

The third point agreed upon by the nations was that all prisoners of war must be released through full exchanges, mainly minors: “All illegally deported and displaced Ukrainian children, as well as all other illegally detained Ukrainian civilians, must be returned to Ukraine.”

The agreements were signed by: Albania, Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Benin, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Cape Verde, Canada, Chile, Comoros, Costa Rica, Ivory Coast, Council of Europe, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Estonia, European Commission, European Council, European Parliament, Fiji, Finland, France, Gambia, Georgia, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Guatemala, Hungary, Iceland, Iraq, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Kosovo, Latvia, Liberia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Norway, Palau, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Republic of Korea, Romania, Rwanda, San Marino, Sao Tome and Principe, Serbia, Singapore, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Somalia, Spain, Suriname, Sweden, Switzerland, Timor Leste, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States, Uruguay.
