Enarsa agreed with Bolivia to continue the supply of natural gas to the North

Energía Argentina and Yacimientos Petrolófilos Fiscales Bolivianos signed the ninth addendum to the initial contract, which ensures supply in August and September.

Energía Argentina SA (Enarsa) and Yacimientos Petrolófilos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB) signed the ninth addendum to the natural gas supply contract, in order to ensure supply for Tucumán and the rest of northern Argentina during August and September.

The state company reached this new agreement due to the proximity of the expiration of the previous contract (July 31) and in the midst of the significant reduction of gas reserves in Bolivia, which at the same time reduced the supply for the national region. In addition, it seeks to avoid new supply cuts to industries and other sectors, as happened weeks ago, during the winter.

The agreement will allow the provision of up to 4 million cubic meters per day (MMm³/d) of natural gas, meeting the needs of central and northern Argentina, reported different media in the country.

Bolivian reserves are around 33.6 MMm³/d, with exports of 20 MMm³/d to Brazil and 6 MMm³/d to Argentina. However, the reduction in production capacity has left Bolivia with a significant deficit to cover its internal consumption, estimated at 15 MMm³/d, of which only 10 MMm³/d is available.

The government of Javier Milei was able to close this new pact, after enabling the works of the reversal of the Northern Gasduct, which will be operational on September 15, according to the official forecast. Once this phase is completed, a significant increase in transportation capacity is expected, with the addition of 5 MMm³/d to the existing supply. In a second stage, another 4 MMm³/d will be added, which will contribute to satisfying the region’s growing energy demand, reported the Energía&Negocios site.

Agreement with Brazil

Last April, Energía Argentina and Petrobras signed a “Memorandum of Understanding” (MOU) for a period of three years. This will allow Enarsa to solve the NOA gas supply, while the recently tendered works for the reversal of the Northern Gas Pipeline are completed, and in turn will enable the exchange of information, identification and feasibility study of the different alternatives, actions and medium-sized mechanisms. and long term for energy cooperation and complementarity between Petrobras and Energía Argentina.

The president of Enarsa, Juan Carlos Doncel Jonesstressed the importance of this agreement in the situation facing gas supply in the NOA, during the transition that makes supply from the Vaca Muerta fields possible.
