6.3 magnitude earthquake reported in Peru

This Sunday, June 16, a shaking in Peruwith magnitude of 6.3 degreeswhich had its origin on the southern Peruvian coast, in the department of Arequipa, without the authorities having reported any victims at the moment.

According to the Geophysical Institute of Peru, the earthquake, with a surface depth of 25 km, occurred around 09:47 local time (14:47 GMT) and had the Pacific Ocean as its epicenter.

Despite the intensity of the earthquake, no tsunami alert was generated, according to the Navy’s Hydrography and Navigation Directorate published on social networks.

The earthquake occurred in front of the province of Caravelí, Arequipa. 41 kilometers from the epicenter is the small town of Chala, with about 10,000 inhabitants.

Although at first the National Institute of Civil Defense indicated that there was no report of material damage or injured people, later local media such as Infobae indicated that in the district of Chala “the windows of the Private Educational Institution, Henry Ford and damage to the municipal stadium in the area. In addition, damage was also reported in the district municipality of Atiquipa.”

Added to this is that in the town of Huanuhuanu there were “slides in Tocota and Mollehuaca, damages are being assessed; while the main road to the Jaqui district was partially affected,” the same media added.

Peru, which has around 33 million inhabitants, is located in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, which extends along the American west coast and where the highest seismic activity in the world is recorded. In fact, every year, at least 100 earthquakes are recorded that are perceptible by the inhabitants of this South American country.
