Louis Marcotte highlighted the stability of diplomatic relations with Peru and that Canada will continue its cooperation program in the country.

The Canadian Embassy in Peru celebrated Canada Day commemorating 80 years of diplomatic relations with Peru this year.

Louis Marcotte, Canada’s ambassador to Peru, highlighted that Peru is one of Peru’s most important trading partners and Canada one of Peru’s most important. Bilateral diplomatic relations began in 1944.

“Since we signed our free trade agreement (FTA) 15 years ago, bilateral trade in goods has more than doubled. “We have seen a diversification of the products that are exchanged, but also a diversification of the type of companies that take advantage of the agreement, including SMEs,” he said.

Marcotte added that Canadian investment in Peru has also more than doubled and highlighted that in terms of services, Canada was chosen as a partner of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation.

“Through the G2G modality, for Chavimochic Stage III and thus be able to offer the world-class experience of one of the leading engineering services companies in Canada. We will continue to create bridges to encourage trade and investment and create jobs,” he said.

Canadian cooperation in Peru

The Canadian Ambassador stated that since 1968 his country began its cooperation program in Peru.

“We work with communities, governmental, international and non-governmental organizations to serve the most vulnerable populations and close gaps in gender equality, the integration of migrants and the needs of indigenous peoples,” he emphasized.

Marcotte noted that new areas of cooperation have emerged over the years and that Canada will provide additional financing for 80 natural infrastructure projects in Peru to reduce water risks such as droughts, floods and water pollution.

“In January of this year, our Minister of International Cooperation Ahmed Hussen visited Lima and Cusco to see for himself the Canadian contribution to the development of Peru. “We will continue to work together, locally and in international bodies, to protect the environment from the consequences of climate change,” he said.

The Ambassador stated that his country continues to collaborate with “our partners in the government of Peru and civil society to promote and protect democracy and human rights.”

“What has become increasingly clear is that it is essential that countries remain active, together, in defending security, stability and dignity and in supporting a just and lasting peace,” he commented.
