When and where Sofía Herrera disappeared

A change of direction in research

In August 2017, the judge who was carrying out the investigation, Eduardo López, left his position and was replaced by Daniel Césari Hernández. The new magistrate dedicated an entire year to reviewing the 13,000 pages of the case from scratch. In September 2020, he issued an international arrest warrant against Dagoberto Díaz, known as “Espanta la Virgen”a Chilean nomad who is suspected of having been involved in the disappearance.

Dagoberto Díaz had been mentioned at the beginning of the investigation, when he stated that a person he knew had trapped Sofía in a fox trap.

Although this story was initially discarded, years later, one of the children of the friendly family present at the campsite that day, named Néstor, stated that he saw a man taking Sofía in a gray car with a dog. This description matched Díaz’s physical appearance, reinforcing suspicion about him.

a desperate mother

María Elena Delgado, Sofía’s mother, is a tireless activist in the search for her daughter and in raising awareness about the disappearances of children in Argentina. In recent statements, he expressed his anguish and frustration over the case of Loan Peña, a 5-year-old boy who disappeared in Corrientes. “I experience Loan with great anguish, I cannot understand how a boy disappears and cannot be found,” he lamented.

Since Sofía’s disappearance in 2008, María Elena criticized the lack of progress in the search protocols and the slow response of the authorities. “After my daughter, kids continue to disappear and it’s incredible. Now there are 99 kids missing,” she said.

Sofía Herrera’s mother

Sofía Herrera’s mother is still searching.

She also stressed the urgency of improving the effectiveness of investigations and the activation of the Sofia Alert, an emergency system that, according to her, is activated too late in many cases.

When comparing his daughter’s case with that of Loan Pena, María Elena highlighted the similarities in the delay of alerts and the lack of coordination between security forces. “I see the same errors that I experienced with Sofía. There is the Sofia Alert, but it is notified too late,” she said, also referring to recent cases such as that of Guadalupe Lucero, where the late activation of the alert could have negatively affected the chances of rescue.

“I’m waiting for the baby to appear… I’m very distressed because I think about what happens, I know what it’s like to live in this situation and then have them say the same thing, that it’s ‘a settling of accounts,'” said María Elena, underlining the need to improve procedures and speed in responses to missing children.
