“In five minutes it was cloudy, it rained, it hailed, the universal flood fell and the sun came out.” With this descriptive sequence, an X user, Luis Perdiguero, accompanied a video that showed the force of nature as it passed through Madrid this Tuesday.

The incident took place shortly before eight in the afternoon, when a wet burst hit the west of the capital, causing heavy rain and occasional hail, accompanied by enormous gusts of wind. The entire Community of Madrid was on alert for storms.

In a very short period of time, up to 22 liters per square meter and gusts of up to 62 km/h were collected, according to data from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) at the Ciudad Universitaria station. The temperature there went from a hot 35.8ºC to just 17.3ºC in a matter of minutes. The maximum of the day was 37ºC, recorded shortly before.

While the phenomenon devastated part of the capital, other areas did not register any type of precipitation. As an example, the data collected a short distance away, at the Aemet station in Retiro, where no rain was recorded and the thermal values dropped much less, to 28ºC, ten more than in Ciudad Universitaria.

The temperature graph in the first station mentioned is quite eloquent:

The power of the storm can be seen in the numerous videos that Madrid residents recorded and shared abundantly on social networks, most taken from homes.

There are also striking photos taken from a distance:

The majority of recordings were captured in the areas of Moncloa, Chamberí and Tetuán, the most affected districts. There were also damages in Malasaña.
