LIME –

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake shook southern Peru early Saturday morning as part of a chain of aftershocks following a 7.2 magnitude quake recorded the day before.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck at 2:05 a.m. (0705 GMT) and was centered 26 miles (42 kilometers) southeast of Atiquipa district in Caravelí province in the Arequipa region at a depth of 12 miles (19.3 km).

The Peruvian Geophysical Institute located the epicenter in the sea, 54 km (33.5 miles) southwest of the Chala district in Arequipa.

The National Institute of Civil Defense reported that the earthquake “was perceived strongly by the population” and that “monitoring continues in vulnerable areas.” No personal or property damage was immediately reported.

Peru is a country prone to earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire.
