Mexico City. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said he is not opposed to the gradual replacement of members of the Federal Judicial Branch (PJF), although he emphasized that this process should not be dilatory.

He celebrated that the ministers of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation, the members of the Federal Judiciary Council and other members of this power are beginning to join the dialogue to debate the issue, but above all he celebrated that they have accepted that a reform is needed .

It is a very important step forward and worthy of recognition that they accept that reform in the Judiciary is necessary..

At yesterday’s morning press conference, the president was asked if he would agree that the transition in the positions of judges, magistrates and ministers should take place gradually or in stages, as several actors proposed the day before, on the first day of the forum on the reform of the PJF that was held in the Chamber of Deputies.

I offer no opposition. I believe that the fundamental thing is that the reform be carried out and that the people participate in the election, because the people have an accurate instinct, the people are wise. So, I prefer that the people be the ones that decide, because a judge elected by the people will know that he is there because the citizens elected him, and his master will be the people, and he will act with more freedom, will have the arrogance to feel free.

He considered that it will be the different actors who define the processes for the gradual relief, But also, speaking in legal terms, or in lawyers’ jargon, not to apply delaying tactics, not to wait for time to pass, as some are waiting for; not so much anymore, but before they were waiting for time to pass and for us to leave. In any case, we are going to leave, but the transformation will continue..

He pointed out that the reform must also seek parity, that is, that half are women and the other half are men, since of the three powers of the Union, in the Judiciary there are more imbalance in that material.

To the question of how to prevent the narco or businessmen intervene in the event that members of the PJF are elected at the polls, to appoint judges, magistrates or ministers who are sympathetic to their causes, the president said: “People are very aware (…) It is not decisive (this possible intervention), because when you have a conscious, politicized people, people do not sell their dignity.”
