The municipality of Los Santos, in the department of Santander, Colombia, is located in a geologically active area known as the Los Santos Knot. This region is one of the places with the highest seismic activity in the country due to the interaction of various tectonic faults, including the Bucaramanga Fault.
The confluence of these faults and the constant release of energy accumulated in the Earth’s crust cause frequent seismic movements. The complex tectonic activity is a consequence of the collision between the South American and Caribbean tectonic plateswhich generates a large number of microseisms that can be perceived by the local population.
