Fans who have read Julia Quinn’s books know the love story between Benedict Bridgerton and Sophie. It is a romance inspired by Cinderella in which the second Bridgerton brother falls in love with a young maid whom he rescues in a tavern in the English countryside.

What Benedict does not remember at that moment is that he already met Sophie years before, at a costume ball organized by his mother. She, the illegitimate daughter of a count, had escaped to the event behind the back of her stepmother, Araminta. In the third season of The Bridgertons, episode 8, Clearly, confirms that Benedict will take over from Colin by mentioning this masquerade ball.

After Penelope reveals that she is Lady Whistledown and wins the queen’s favor, Colin accepts his wife’s secret identity and Eloise decides to accompany a newly married Francesca to Scotland, after Benedict embraces his bisexuality, the scene in question.

At minute 63, just as Benedict is saying goodbye to Eloise, the brothers mention the event. “I’ll miss you,” Benedict tells her with feigned indifference, to which she responds smiling: “Just until next year, do you see Mom letting me miss her costume ball?” “I don’t think so,” he answers, and adds: “And I will be, hidden behind a mask, fleeing from marriageable ones like the plague.”
