Qatar is “reevaluating” its role as mediator between Israel and the Hamas terrorist group in the Gaza war, indicated this Wednesday (04/17/2024) the prime minister of the emirate, who recently reacted to criticism of his country’s performance in the search of a truce.

“We are proceeding with a global reassessment of our role,” declared Head of Government and Foreign Minister Mohamed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, in a press conference with the Turkish Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan.

Al Thani noted that there were “expectations about Qatar’s role” and that it would make “a timely decision at the right time” about its continued role as intermediary between Israel and Hamas, in power in the Gaza Strip.

Negotiations in a certain “stalemate”

The Qatari official had indicated shortly before that the negotiations were “in a delicate stage, with a certain stagnation,” although he had assured that the mediators were “doing their best to address this stagnation.”

The Government of Qatar recently described as “not at all constructive” a statement by Democratic US Representative Steny Hoyer, who urged the emirate to exert greater pressure on Hamas.

At the joint press conference, the Turkish foreign minister accused Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, of seeking to “drag the region into war to remain in power.”
