Ukraine claims to have thwarted 55 Russian attacks in Donetsk – DW – 04/29/2024

The Ukrainian Army claimed on Monday (04/29/2024) that it thwarted numerous Russian attacks in the eastern Donetsk region, a day after it admitted Russian advances at several points on the front. Ukrainian forces, who failed in their major counteroffensive launched last summer, have faced the unstoppable Russian push since the fall of the city of Avdiivka in the east of the country in February.

Yesterday the Russian Ministry of Defense claimed responsibility for the capture of Novobajmutivka, a town located about 10 km north of Avdiivka, in Donetsk. Today the Ukrainian army claimed to have “repelled 55 attacks” in several villages north and west of Novobajmutivka. Further south, Ukraine says its forces “continue to contain the enemy” in several towns west of the Moscow-held city of Donetsk, including the town of Krasnogorivka.

According to the latest report from the kyiv General Staff, Russia suffered more than 1,300 casualties along the entire line of contact last day, a figure substantially higher than those reported in previous days. kyiv also claims to have destroyed 37 Russian artillery systems in that time period.

“To preserve the life and physical integrity of our fighters, units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine have been deployed on new lines west of Berichiv, Semenivka and Novomikhailivka,” said the head of the Ukrainian Army, Oleksandr Sirski, who yesterday admitted ” Russian tactical successes in some areas” of the front. He today added that his troops are inflicting a large number of casualties and material losses on the Russian forces.

The Ukrainian general also highlighted the intensity of the fighting in the Chasiv Yar area, a town located more than a dozen kilometers west of occupied Bakhmut, which is, according to kyiv, a priority Russian objective.

Ukraine hopes that the arrival of the new aid package approved by the United States after months of blocking Washington’s assistance to kyiv will allow it to reduce its disadvantage in artillery ammunition with respect to Russia and stabilize the situation on the front.
