The Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, has conveyed his condolences and solidarity to the Government, the people of Kenya and the families of the victims of the floods caused by the torrential rains that have fallen in recent days in the country. “He is saddened by the loss of life and damage caused by the flash floods in Nairobi and other parts of Kenya,” said the Secretary-General’s spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, in a statement. In this sense, he has reiterated “the continued commitment of the United Nations to support the Government of Kenya in this difficult time”, while he has mentioned that the international organization’s team on the ground has been working closely with the authorities since the beginning of the rains at the beginning of the year. The Kenyan authorities have estimated this Monday at nearly a hundred dead and 40 missing due to the torrential rains, affecting more than 37,500 homes. In addition, at least 42 people have died, including 17 minors, due to the failure of a dam due to the pressure caused by the floods. Kenya and Tanzania have been suffering for weeks from torrential rains that have caused numerous floods and landslides. Last week, Tanzanian authorities raised the death toll to 155 due to the inclement weather caused by ‘El Niño’, which has caused great devastation in both countries.
