Relatives of prisoners in Ecuador denounce mistreatment and lack of food (+Photos)

In the middle of a sit-in this Thursday outside the North Judicial Complex, a group of citizens presented the request for a hearing to issue precautionary measures and put a stop to the situation.

According to them, they have not been allowed to visit their loved ones for five months and above all they are worried about the lack of food and medicine.

Estefanía Garzón, whose family member is imprisoned in the Cotopaxi prison, commented that they recently managed to bring in three food trucks, but that they have been insufficient for all the inmates in that penitentiary.

At the same time, this morning representatives of the Government presented a request to the State Attorney General’s Office to investigate the company in charge of providing food to prisons for alleged irregularities.

The alerts received have generated considerable interest due to the seriousness that the alleged crimes could have and the possible involvement of the LaFattoria SA Company, the Executive document states.

For weeks there have been complaints about problems with prisoners’ access to food, although the National Service for Comprehensive Care for Persons Deprived of Liberty and Adolescent Offenders (SNAI) stated last Friday that “food is guaranteed.”

Adding to this problem is that the Committee of Relatives of Prisoners assures that torture continues in the penitentiaries and refers to human rights violations by the Armed Forces, which since January took control of the main prisons.

The militarization of Ecuadorian prisons occurred within the framework of the state of exception and internal armed conflict declared by the Ecuadorian president, Daniel Noboa, against organized crime in the midst of escalating insecurity at the national level.
