The British pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca confirmed on Wednesday (05/08/2024) that it will withdraw its Covid-19 vaccine from the market, of which it has sold more than 3 billion doses worldwide to date, due to “lack of demand.”

In a statement, the manufacturer noted that it feels “incredibly proud” of that vaccine (Vaxzevria), which was a pioneer among those that helped combat the coronavirus when the pandemic broke out, although it has made a commercial decision.

The company explained that the increase in new variants of the coronavirus has caused demand to shift to new “updated” vaccines.

The Covid-19 vaccine developed by the British pharmaceutical company and the University of Oxford saved millions of lives during the health crisis, although its reputation was also damaged, as it caused rare and sometimes fatal blood clots in some people.

More than 6.5 million lives were saved in its first year of use, according to the pharmaceutical company.

“Our efforts have been recognized by governments around the world and are widely perceived as critical components in ending the global pandemic,” he noted in his note.

The manufacturer also reveals that the development of new vaccines that are more closely tailored to Covid and now circulating on the market meant that there was a “surplus of updated vaccines available”, leading to “a decline in demand” for its vaccine, which is “no longer manufactured or supplied.”
