More than 280 million migrants mark the global movement of the 21st century

Although the report works on the basis of decades, preliminary numbers indicate that Europe and Asia had around 87 million and 86 million international migrants in 2022, respectively, adding up to 61% of the total world population of international migrants.

They are followed by North America, with almost 59 million international migrantsequivalent to 21% of the world’s migrant population, Africa, with 9%, Latin America and the Caribbean, with 5%, and Oceania, with 3%.

For the IOM, immigration from other regions predominates in North America, with the United States of America being the main destination country.

He later specified that “in the United States of America, the number of foreign-born people residing in the country has more than quadrupled, going from less than 12 million in 1970 to 51 million in 2020.”. Once the net migration figures for 2023 and 2024 are consolidated, another reality will be shown by the increase in migration in this period, the participants noted.

But the most marked global growth occurs between 2000 and 2020. Europe experienced the second highest growth during this period, with an increase of 30 million in the number of international migrants, followed by North America with an increase of 18.3 million (going from 40.4 million to 58.7 million in 20 years).

The approaches

Several proposals were outlined at the event held at the headquarters of the United Nations, UN, and the delegations committed to carrying out the recommendations in their respective countries.

Panel 1: Regular migration pathways are essential to realizing the promising potential of migration and addressing global challenges. The destination chosen, the mode of migration and the results achieved depend largely on the options available to migrants.

The facilitation of regular migration routes is one of the fundamental objectives of the IOM Strategic Plan for the period 2024-2028.

Panel II: The objective is to attract the interest of more governments to join global efforts to establish, expand and strengthen regular migration pathways as a fundamental element to ensure safe, orderly and regular migration.

Panel III: In addition to the political, economic and social challenges in border areas, they often obstruct development activities and hinder interventions to promote resilience and prosperity in border communities located in conflict zones.

IOM places increasing emphasis on strengthening border governance approaches of Member States and their Governments to be more inclusive and allow for safer cross-border movements and reduce irregular migration. To learn more about the presentations, go here.
