The Israeli ambassador to Spain, Rodica Radian-Gordon, regretted this Thursday having to leave Spain “due to some vain decisions adopted by the Spanish government” which, in her opinion, will not contribute to peace in the Middle East.

Radian-Gordon, whose mission in Madrid concluded this summer, was called yesterday Wednesday for consultations by the Government of Israel after the President of the Spanish Executive, Pedro Sánchez, announced that Spain will recognize Palestine as a State on May 28, a decision that Ireland and Norway also communicated.

“I regret having to return to Israel due to some vain decisions adopted by the Spanish Government, which are not going to contribute to peace and security in the Middle East, nor are they going to facilitate the release of our 128 kidnapped people still in the hands of Hamas,” he said. The ambassador published on the social network X.

The ambassador alludes to the Israelis who continue as Hamas hostages since October 7, 2023, when the organization attacked Israel and killed around 1,200 people and kidnapped another 200. The diplomat also appreciates the “constant support” of Israel’s friends and has said she trusts “that the ties of friendship between Israel and Spain are louder than the voices that aspire to distance us.”

The President of the Spanish Government stated on Wednesday, when announcing the decision to recognize Palestine as a State, that “This recognition is not against anyone.”, “it is not against the people of Israel (…) and much less against the Jews.”

For Sánchez, the recognition is in favor of the coexistence of two States and International Law, although he assumed that the decision may have consequences because some Israeli leaders do not see it that way. “We are aware of this, and I have to tell you that we are prepared to assume them because we think that the purpose of diplomacy is not to not bother anyone, it is to defend one’s values and interests in a peaceful way,” Sánchez added.

Yesterday Israel also called its ambassadors in Oslo and Dublin for consultations, and summoned the diplomatic representatives of Norway, Ireland and Spain to express its displeasure at the recognition of the Palestinian State, something that some 140 countries have already done.
