Due to attacks and looting by armed groups, only 20 percent of health centers can function.

Recently, Haiti’s Ministry of Public Health and Population reported that 34 public and private sector health institutions closed due to violence.

In the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince and the municipalities of Gonâve, Arcahaie, Cornillon, Croix-des-Bouquets, Fermathe, Léogâne and Petit-Goâve, care centers were working at a slower pace due to problems with the supply of supplies and of energy.

The shootings cause forced absenteeism of the staff, and patients are prevented from reaching the clinics due to crossfire, said the official quoted by the online newspaper Haiti Libre.

Recently, the Haiti Medical Association asked that the right to health be respected, violated with the closure of state and private hospitals due to the growing wave of violence that the Caribbean country is experiencing.

“The Haitian Medical Association, on behalf of all its members, wishes to raise its voice in this tumultuous and horrific situation that is disrupting the lives of all citizens of our nation,” underlines a statement from the organization.

The right to health, that precious good, derived from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948 and our Constitution, responds to the greatest aspirations of man since its origins, the note points out.

“The peaceful search for solutions that respond to the wishes of the Haitian people and also respect the inalienable rights of all people without distinction and, particularly, institutions and health personnel, is vital,” the association stated.

Health is a primary need for women, children, men, young people and the elderly in our country, since the well-being and safety of everyone is at stake, the entity stated in its statement.
