New Prime Minister of Haiti takes office

PRINCE PORT.- This Wednesday, Garry Conille, took office as the new Prime Minister of Haiti. The ceremony, held at the presidential residence in Port-au-Prince, marks the beginning of a government that will face unprecedented challenges, including health, humanitarian and governance crises.

In his inauguration speech, Conille expressed his commitment to the Haitian people, recognizing the difficult situation the country is going through. “In these moments of crisis, the true character of a nation is revealed,” he said, pledging to serve with integrity, transparency and dedication.

The ministerial cabinet was also presented during the ceremony, with prominent figures such as Dominique Dupuy, representative to UNESCO, and with Conille also assuming the Interior portfolio. This formation of the government paves the way for the implementation of the Multinational Security Support Mission, aimed at containing the growing criminal violence in Haiti.

The transition to this new government was triggered by the resignation of Ariel Henry amid a wave of violence and chaos, with pressure from criminal leaders such as Jimmy Chérizier, alias ‘Barbecue’. Henry’s resignation, which occurred after an emergency meeting with regional and international leaders, paved the way for Conille’s appointment by the Transitional Presidential Council.

The task that awaits Conille and his team is monumental. In addition to addressing insecurity and political unrest, they will have to confront the lingering effects of the humanitarian crisis and the pandemic. Haiti’s fate in the coming years will depend largely on the new leadership’s ability to navigate these difficult waters and lead the country toward stability and progress.
