Hezbollah launches new barrage of rockets against Israel – DW – 06/14/2024

The Lebanese Hezbollah movement reported this Thursday (06/13/2024) that it launched a new barrage of rockets and drones against Israeli Army positions, after an important commander of the group died this week in an Israeli bombing.

It is one of the largest attacks by Hezbollah against Israeli military positions since the outbreak of the war in the Gaza Strip between Israel and the Hamas movement, considered a terrorist organization by several countries.

Since then, exchanges of fire have been almost daily on the border between Lebanon and northern Israel.

Fighters from Hezbollah, a movement allied to Hamas, launched “a rocket and drone attack, targeting six barracks and military sites” and simultaneously flew “squadrons of explosive drones” against three other Israeli bases, the pro-Iran Shiite movement reported.

Taleb Sami Abdallah, alias Abu Taleb, was killed with three other Hezbollah fighters in an Israeli attack that hit a house they were in in the village of Juaiyya in southern Lebanon on Tuesday, June 11, according to a close source. to the movement.

A Lebanese military source indicated that Abu Taleb is the “most important Hezbollah commander killed” since the Shiite movement opened a front with Israel, after the outbreak of the war in Gaza.

One of the targets was the Israeli base that Hezbollah claimed houses the intelligence headquarters “responsible for the assassinations.”

Violence intensified on the northern border

The Israeli Army reported that “about 40 projectiles were launched towards the Galilee and the Golan Heights area” and stated that most were intercepted, but that others caused fires.

Israeli government spokesman David Mencer said his country “will respond strongly to all Hezbollah aggressions.”

According to the Lebanese national press agency, Israeli planes launched an attack on a house in Janata, a small municipality in the south of the country, on Thursday night. The action caused the death of a “civilian” and injuries to “seven other civilians,” he added.

In recent weeks, violence on Israel’s northern border has intensified. Hezbollah has increased the use of drones to attack positions of the Israeli Army, which has responded with bombings against the group’s fighters.

Around 470 people have been killed in Lebanon after more than eight months of cross-border attacks since October 7, most of them combatants, but also about 90 civilians, according to an AFP count based on information from Hezbollah and Lebanese authorities.

On the Israeli side, at least 15 soldiers and 11 civilians were killed, according to authorities. On both sides of the border, tens of thousands of people were forced to flee their homes due to hostilities.
