In Britain, climate activists sprayed the stone monument Stonehenge with an orange substance. The group Just Stop Oil posted a video on platform X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday showing two people running toward the stone circle and spraying paint.

Police arrested two suspects. The protest group wrote that they are calling on the next British government to sign a binding treaty to phase out fossil fuels by 2030.

In the background of the video, people can be heard yelling at protesters to stop. Some are also trying to arrest the two activists. “We have arrested two people following an incident at Stonehenge this afternoon,” Wiltshire Police said. The arrests are due to suspicion of damage to monuments, the police said.

Official condemnation

The Stonehenge stone circle is one of the most famous monuments in Britain. The stones are precisely aligned with the position of the sun on the summer and winter solstices. It is believed that these events have been celebrated there for thousands of years. On Thursday the summer solstice will be celebrated there.

The group clarified that the orange substance is made from cornstarch and will disappear naturally once it rains on the monument and that, however, action by the British government is urgent to combat the effects of climate change. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak condemned the protest as vandalism.
