when will the shortest night be?

Summer has arrived in several countries around the world and according to calculations by the National Astronomical Observatory of Mexico, It officially began this Thursday, June 20, and will last approximately 93 days and 16 hours.

According to the criteria of

The summer solstice is the celebration that marks the beginning of this season in the northern hemisphere. At the same time, the southern hemisphere began winter.

What is the summer solstice?

The summer solstice is a phenomenon that occurs when the sun reaches its maximum declination, projecting its light over the greatest geographic latitude on Earth. This happens at the point on the ecliptic where the Sun reaches its most northern position.

This results in earlier sunrises and later sunsets. Which means that this occurs when one of the Earth’s poles reaches its maximum inclination towards the Sun, placing itself at the Tropic of Cancer. This position allows the Sun to reach its highest point in the sky at noon, providing the longest duration of daylight.

The summer solstice is the day with the greatest sunshine or sun exposure of the entire year.

It is worth mentioning that the beginning of summer does not always occur on the same day, as it can vary between June 20 and 22. These variations are due to the way in which the sequence of years in the calendar (leap or not) fits with the duration of each Earth’s orbit around the Sun.

The longest day and the shortest night

The summer solstice will officially begin on June 20, 2024, marking the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. On this day, the duration of sunlight will be around 13 hours and 24 minutes in many regions of the northern hemisphere.

Having more hours of sunlight means that the night of June 20 will be the shortest of the year, lasting approximately 10 hours and 36 minutes.

On June 20, the shortest night was experienced.

The days are going to start getting shorter

With the arrival of summer, the days will gradually begin to shorten. This reduction in light will be most evident in July and August, with a loss of between 1 and 2 minutes of sunlight per day. This pace will increase in September, when the days will be shortened by between 2 and 3 minutes a day.
