Havana, Jun 28 (RHC) The Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warned today that more than 10,000 sick and wounded people in Gaza need medical attention abroad.

“We call for facilitating medical evacuation through all possible routes, including Rafah and Karem Shalom (border crossings), to Egypt, the West Bank, East Jerusalem and from there to other countries when necessary,” the official wrote on his account on the social network X.

Sustained medical evacuations must be carried out through a safe, timely, transparent and organized process, he stressed.

In this regard, he estimated that “these patients urgently need specialized life-saving care that they cannot obtain in Gaza.”

The WHO director general welcomed the evacuation of 21 patients from the coastal enclave yesterday.

This is the first time since the Rafah crossing was closed on May 7, said Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

On that date, the crossing was attacked by the Israeli army on the grounds of preventing the entry of weapons and military equipment to the Islamic Resistance Movement and its allies.

The operation raised a wave of international condemnation because Rafah was the only gateway for medicine, fuel and food to the besieged territory for more than seven months.

At the beginning of the ground offensive in the area, more than a million Palestinians were refugees in the nearby city of the same name, but after almost two months of the war campaign, less than 60,000 remain, according to the UN.

In an interview with the radio station The Voice of Palestine, Health Minister Majed Abu Ramadan last month denounced that the situation of the sector in the coastal enclave is catastrophic.

More than 80 percent of hospitals and medical centers in Gaza are out of service as a result of Israel’s continued aggression, he said. (Source: Prensa Latina)
