the incredible story of Dora Burlet in Córdoba

How many times can a person reinvent themselves? The question can have multiple answers. But Dora Burlet (74) knows that in her life story she had to do it many times. She was born in Los Cisnes and grew up in La Carlotaa small town in the southeast of the province of Córdoba, where he completed primary and secondary school.

At the age of 18 he moved to “La Docta”. He wanted to pursue a career in Philosophy and Letters. He entered the convent of the Mercedarian Sisters of the Child Jesus. He stayed for a little over three years and took the habits. When he was going to become a teacher, he decided that this was not the way for him and he left. On that trip he met Third World priests who were of great inspiration to her.

Outside the convent, she taught an art workshop in Bouwer prison for some years through Cáritas. “Teaching people who live within walls that beauty exists through art was an incredible experience,” he tells The voice.

One fine day, he decided to return to a town and settled in Canals, another small town in the southeastern province. He studied nursing, embraced and healed his neighbors from the deep interior.

That job allowed him to support his family. A few years ago he retired from that activity but not from his life. Parallel to his work in health, he studied painting, his great passion, in Buenos Aires with Eduardo Giusiano – born in Viamonte.

“For nine years I attended different Giusiano workshops. It was quite an adventure because I lived in a very small town and I traveled religiously every Thursday to train,” he summarizes.

At the beginning of the millennium he had the opportunity to travel to Paris to study with Horacio García Rossi, who made optical art with Julio Le Parc. They were the creators of kinetic art. But Burlet’s great mentor was Giusiano, with whom he always remained in contact and today participates in the artist’s exhibition in Córdoba capital.

The painter and his legacy HE opens this Wednesday, June 19, at 6 p.m., at the Chateau Antonio Seguí Contemporary Art Center, from the city of Córdoba. The exhibition will remain open until Sunday, September 8. It is a tribute to the painter and teacher from Córdoba Eduardo Giusiano.

–What does it mean to you to be part of that event?

–For me, being present at this exhibition is important. It is the communion of several artists to whom Eduardo’s generosity unites us. The trajectory of each one does not matter so much, the opportunity to share a space and an aesthetic proposal prevails in times of so much individuality. We are both from towns in the deep south, that’s wonderful too.

–What is your proposal as a painter and what will attendees be able to see?

–I dedicate myself to textile art. I’m always on the search. I like installations, performances and interacting with other artists, it’s what I like the most. My work tends towards abstract informalism, which is acrylic, tempera, but I am always open to other trends. I always use color at its highest degree of saturation. My motto is to look from the horizon line up and art saves, is what I always say. From then on, I don’t know what fate will give me, but art saved my life. It is what I identify with the universe with, it is what gives me strength to continue walking. Today I process fabrics with the shibori method, which is an ancient Japanese dyeing custom, and I glue the edges. It’s like building a nest, which would be my future exhibition.

–You are still settled in Canals, what are your days like in that town?

–Yes, I live very calmly in that city. I have a workshop where I live practically isolated. Now they have made a lake in front of my house, there are geese and a bridge that changes colors. The sunrises and sunsets are beautiful. And in that workshop I have colleagues with whom we form the painting group Mousika, which is a Greek word that encompasses all the arts we do: installations, performances and woodcuts. There is my world, it is my nest.

–To close, can we all make art?

–I firmly believe and from experience that every individual can generate plastic facts. Of course, my advice is always the same: work and study the great masters. Time will tell if we are plastic artists. I do not believe in criticism, but in the analysis of the work of people who know more than you.
