‘Game of Thrones’ reading order: how to read all the books chronologically

‘Game of Thrones’ continues to beat in the extensive career of HBO. The producer, after a controversial ending among fans, decided to extend its universe on the small screen with a grid of spin-offs throughout Westeros. The first of them is already among us: ‘The House of the Dragon’. In it we can learn how House Targaryen dominated the Iron Throne, as George RR Martin was responsible for capturing in his novel, ‘Fire and Blood’.

Do you want to know the author’s original work? At MeriStation we tell you everything you need to know to follow the saga in order. We have chosen to separate the main novels (except ‘Fire and Blood’) and the three stories of the Tales of Dunk and Egg, which function as independent prequels to ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’.

A Song of Ice and Fire Saga in chronological order

We introduce ‘Blood and Fire’ as the first book to read, even though it is not part of the main ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ saga. We have done it this way because Chronologically it fits this way, although we clarify that this work is not so much a novel, but a compendium that compiles the history of the Targaryens 300 years before the events of the main books. This is the order we propose:

  • Blood and Fire (2018)
  • Game of Thrones (1998)
  • A Clash of Kings (1998).
  • A Storm of Swords (2000)
  • A Feast for Crows (2005)
  • A Dance with Dragons (2011)

The ‘Song of Ice and Fire’ saga is incomplete. George RR Martin plans to close it as a heptalogy, but the last two books remain in limbo. ‘Winds of Winter’ It has been delayed multiple times and still has no confirmed release date. The final volume will be ‘Spring Dream’ and it will close the story in a different way than what HBO did with the ‘Game of Thrones’ series.

In what order to read the Game of Thrones books?

George RR Martin hasn’t just explored his fantasy universe in the main novels. Over the years, he has written prequel stories known as the Dunk and Egg Tales. There are three novels that have also been grouped into a single volume, The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: Tales of Dunk and Egg (2015):

  • ‘The Knight Errant’ (1998)
  • ‘The Loyal Sword’ (2005)
  • ‘The Mysterious Knight’ (2010)

In this house we have reviewed some elements of his background to understand how Westeros worked before A Song of Ice and Fire. If you click on this link you will learn about the forging of the Iron Throne, the seat that everyone wants to occupy. On the other hand, here we tell you in depth about the problems of the Targaryen kings. Remember that you can now watch House of the Dragon with your Max subscription.
