Saint Catherine of Siena He was a member of the Third Order of Saint Dominic – the lay branch of the Order of Preachers. She became an influential woman in politics and diplomacy in Florence, a mediator in different civil and ecclesiastical conflicts on the Italian peninsula and even played a decisive role in getting Pope Gregory XI to leave Avignon and return to Rome.
In addition to her role as an ambassador of peace, she dedicated her life to prayer and caring for the poor and sick, as well as promoting an apostolic and evangelical life. She was canonized in 1461 by Pius II and proclaimed a doctor of the Church in 1970 by Paul VI.
